Over time there were several proposals for building a dam North of Charleston where the foothills came down to the river and formed solid rock banks more than 100 feet high. For example, an 1889 Cochise County report stated that a dam 60 feet high and 400 feet long would store more than 300,000,000 ft.³ of water.
